Almost a year ago, I wrote a short post on an NPR show entitled “This American Life” or TAL.  It’s an intelligent and subtly funny show whose topics range from the very serious to the very silly.  It continues to be one of my favorite radio programs and recently, on another program called “More Fair Game”, they aired a spoof of TAL by The Kasper Hauser Comedy Group.

As a long time TAL fan, I was almost in tears when I heard their oh-so-accurate rendition of Ira Glass’ unique speech patterns and the show’s often outlandish topics.

If you haven’t heard This American Life before, follow the link.  I recommend “Superpowers” and “The Cruelty of Children” as good starter episodes.

To check out Kasper Hauser Comedy, follow the link. There are two “This American Life” spoofs, and I found the “Gift Giving Guide” to also be extremely humorous.

Computer Sabotage

I finally burned all my digital photos onto DVD’s last month, but whadd’ya know – Murphy’s Law rules supreme again!

The only photos we didn’t back up were our Mazatlan photos from Thanksgiving.  When my husband restarted the computer yesterday a mysterious “.dll” file was missing. After doing a restore our photos were the only files missing.  While we had given a partial CD of photos to his sister, we still lost about 25% of our almost 400 photos.

I have a tendency to get really broken up about stupid things like this – the futility of it all bothers me.  I have a bad habit of holding on to “coulda, woulda, shouldas”, but it’s an attitude I’ve trying to dispose of.  This brave little soldier is doing her best to dwell on what she has and not what she doesn’t have.

So on a more thankful note, here are a few things I am grateful for.

  • The Settler’s of Catan game we bought a week ago
  • The 6″ of snow the weather people said wouldn’t come
  • NPR – National Public Radio
  • A job that afford me a little slacking time…
  • WordPress – so I don’t have to “myspace it up” with the young’ns (I like to make nouns into verbs…)

Next to come…my review of Beowolf the film.

TAL. This American Life, is a documentary style radio program based out of Chicago. Each week they pick a theme and using a mixture of fictional and non-fictional characters, stories and narratives, create an addicting weekly show.

I started listening in 2001. The House on Loon Lake. I had listened to NPR all throughout high school, but never this show. There was no going back. It was love at first listen. These days I don’t catch them on the radio. I stream all of their past shows on  their Web site. Some favorites include:

  • The Cruetly of Children
  • Superpowers
  • Not What I Meant

Apparently they are in league with Showtime and going to make “movies” on the small screen instead of “movies on the radio”. Luckily, the radio program is not going to be cancelled.

In any case, go forth and listen…eth… er…
